Through a dashboard interface, SDS/2 Fabricating brings all the fabricators’ needs right to the users’ fingertips. From the at-a-glance progress charts to streamlined CNC tools, the dashboard is the interface for organizing and implementing fabrication.
Detailers — often required to supply CNC files to the fabricator — will also benefit from the CNC output included in SDS/2 Fabricating. CNC functionality included with SDS/2 Fabricating will enable CNC functionality on all other SDS/2 software solutions.

SDS/2 Erector gives erectors powerful tools to aid in their work process. The 3D model and 2D drawings are accessible and viewable, providing the steel information in its native form. Erectors can generate center of mass and weight calculations for simple members or assemblies. Measurement tools provide the ability to verify necessary information and check erectibility clearances.
Crane placement and reach are also addressed with SDS/2 Erector. Erectors can locate their cranes around the steel model and choose exactly where the best location for placement will be. Easy to import and move around, the crane placement tool is a valuable component to any erector.
In SDS/2 Erector, erectors are afforded even more power to track and record progress to keep their job site on schedule. Through reporting and status tracking tools, daily progress can easily be recorded and future erection can be planned, allowing the model to be color coded as the structure goes up. With this measurable feedback, users can take advantage of the model to help keep the site on schedule. The actual status of the job site can be electronically sent to general contractors to allow them to adjust project schedules.

SDS/2 BIM is the hub of model information for BIM coordinators. For both checkers and engineers, SDS/2 Approval allows users to view the model and detail drawings, along with all design calculations. With various measuring tools and status fields, the accuracy of the model can be confirmed and communicated between engineers and detailers, and vice versa.
Engineers using SDS/2 Approval can run reports designed to aid in the approval process, and assign status to members to denote the level of approval, such as “approved” or “rejected.” These statuses — along with a number of other items, much like an approval checklist — can be used to color code the model to give visual feedback from start to finish of the approval process. At any point, engineers can send the approval status back to the detailer to update the detailer’s model as to which members are approved or need to be revised.
Checkers using SDS/2 Approval can take advantage of similar features, which are customized for the specific purpose of checking models or drawings. This information can be communicated back to the detailer through the same process of assigning status and generating a file that can update the in-progress model. This simple way of communicating through status updates will color code the model to alert the detailer to areas where changes are necessary.
Checking from the model is swiftly becoming a preferred method in the industry, and SDS/2 Approval provides users with the right set of tools to make it your preferred method as well. Increasing the efficiency of communicating changes will subsequently reduce error and increase profits.

The Android device will need to allow the installation of non-Market applications before downloading SDS/2 Mobile Status. To confirm this, go to your Settings for Applications and toggle ON the option to Allow installation of non-Market applications. After the download is complete, select Install and then Open.

Solid state drives are becoming more common and less expensive. Some of our customers are using them for SDS/2 data and are very happy with their speed.
Any current Nvidia GeForce video card, 1 GB RAM or better; Nvidia Quadro cards are also in use. The minimum screen resolution must be 1280x1024.
Intel PRO/100+ Management Adapter PILA8460B; most network cards are acceptable.
Logitech 3 or 4 button mouse
Other Recommended Equipment
You will also want a surge protector or possibly even a battery backup system. Make sure you do NOT get the Trevelian tape back up, but an actual DAT tape drive. Design Data recommends Sony SDT-9000 24GB for a brand of tape drive. Don't forget a CDROM drive.
Hub and network card are only needed if you plan on connecting multiple machines together in a server/client situation.
*You will need x64-bit OS to use more than 3 GB RAM
* You don't have to get SCSI if it's a client and you don't plan on serving files from the machine. IDE is cheaper and probably your best bet if your client fits these requirements.

The new SidePlate for SDS/2 component and tools are plugins that offer a level of automation and intelligence for our users to efficiently place SidePlate connections into their SDS/2 projects. The plugins work by allowing a user to take a project-specific XML file, provided by SidePlate, with all the scheduled design parameters, and import that into their projects. The SidePlate component and tools work with SDS/2 v2016.11 and newer. Take a look at some of the highlighted features for both the component and tools listed below.
• The component will track which connections have
been placed, to help assist in knowing that the connections used on your project are in alignment
with the connections provided by SidePlate. If a misalignment is detected, a mistake can be caught early on and SidePlate can be contacted.
• The user has the ability to modify connection parameters within the component, like Plate A thickness or Dimension A. These modifications are recorded back to the XML provided by SidePlate. The XML file can then be sent back to SidePlate, during the shop drawing review process, to expedite the approval process.
• If a connection must be modified beyond standard configurations, as shown in the component edit, a Graphical mode can be selected to accommodate those modifications.
• The component does NOT accommodate the following steel framing conditions:
-- Steep step configurations (each connection will be populated as if it were a subtle step condition)
-- Skewed beam conditions
-- Narrow configurations (Standard configuration is currently the only option)
-- VSE option 2, 3 or 4 (VSE option 1 is currently the only option)
-- Recessed Plate D (Extended Plate D is currently the only option)
-- Cap plate D (Continuous column is currently the only option)
-- Attachments to the face of SidePlate connection
-- Protected zones Ledger angles
-- Non wide flange shapes
SIDEPLATE MARKUP TOOL
• Allows the user to locate the SidePlate moment frame column that will have connections.
• Allows the user to specify a SidePlate connection ID, when applicable, based off the automatically detected floor levels. These IDs can be specified prior to receiving the project-specific SidePlate XML file.
• Automatically detects and places the SidePlate connections at each location that has an ID previously marked. If the appropriate beams cannot be automatically detected, the user will be prompted to select the appropriate beam(s) for the connection.
SIDEPLATE APPROVAL PROCESS
Using the SidePlate for SDS/2 plugins can make the approval process faster and easier. Once SidePlate connections are imported in the model, the user may need to make some small adjustments to the connection in order to accommodate the needs of the Fabricator or Erector. These changes can be done by editing the component. By making the modifications through the component, any revised data on the connection is written back to the SidePlate XML file that was used to generate the connection. Therefore the 3D model and the SidePlate XML file are kept in sync. In addition to any revised data, the XML file is also updated to include positional X,Y,Z information on each connection. Both the revised and updated data to the XML file will be very helpful during the approval process.
When the SidePlate project or sequence is ready for approval, send the XML file along with the typical drawing submittal. SidePlate engineers will then use the updated XML to assist them in the approval process. The XML file may be returned to the detailer if the SidePlate engineer has changes.
